Top 10 Engagement Shoot location in Los Angeles, You don’t want to Miss
10 Best Engagement Photo Locations in Los Angeles
Trying to choose the perfect location for your engagement photos in Los Angeles? You’re spoiled with options.
One of our favorite things about photographing engagement sessions in LA is just how much variety we have. You can go from dramatic Malibu cliffs and quiet beaches to elegant architecture, city streets, mountain views, and wide-open nature—all without leaving Southern California.
After more than a decade of photographing couples throughout Los Angeles and Malibu, we’ve learned that the “best” engagement photo location isn’t necessarily the most famous one. It’s the location that fits you.
So whether you want romantic, adventurous, elegant, editorial, beachy, or something that feels completely different, here are 10 of our favorite engagement photo locations in and around Los Angeles.
1. El Matador State Beach, Malibu
If you’ve followed MKEshoots for a while, you probably already know how much we love photographing couples in Malibu.
El Matador is one of the most recognizable engagement photo locations near Los Angeles—and for good reason. You get dramatic cliffs, sea caves, rock formations, open beach, and an incredible California coastline all in one location.
Our biggest tip? Consider sunrise.
Sunset at El Matador can be gorgeous, but it can also be incredibly busy. Sunrise gives us softer light, fewer people, and more freedom to create without constantly waiting for someone to walk out of the background.
We also always recommend checking current beach access, weather, and tide conditions before your session.
Best for: Romantic, adventurous and cinematic engagement photos.
MKEshoots tip: Bring something you don’t mind getting a little sandy. Some of our favorite photographs happen when couples stop worrying about staying perfectly clean and just enjoy the beach.

2. Leo Carrillo State Beach, Malibu
Leo Carrillo gives you a completely different Malibu experience.
The rocky coastline, cliffs and open beach create tons of variety, and depending on conditions, we can create everything from soft romantic portraits to dramatic wide-angle images that show off the California landscape.
We especially love Leo Carrillo for sunrise engagement sessions. Early mornings can give the entire location a quieter, more intimate feeling that’s hard to recreate later in the day.
It’s also a great choice for couples who want Malibu engagement photos but don’t necessarily want every photograph to scream “traditional beach session.”
Best for: Couples who want a mix of beach, rocks, movement and dramatic scenery.

3. Malibu Creek State Park
Want nature without the traditional beach look?
Malibu Creek State Park can give you open landscapes, mountains, trails, greenery and a much more earthy California feel.
We love this location for couples who want their engagement photos to feel relaxed and adventurous. Instead of staying in one little corner and cycling through poses, we can walk, explore and let the session unfold naturally.
That works especially well with the MKEshoots approach because we’re big believers in movement over stiff posing.
Best for: Natural, adventurous and relaxed engagement photos.

4. Walt Disney Concert Hall & Downtown Los Angeles
Want something completely different from the beach?
Downtown Los Angeles is one of our favorite places for a more modern, editorial engagement session.
The Walt Disney Concert Hall gives us incredible architecture, metallic textures, clean lines and a completely different visual experience from Malibu.
And yes—we’re going to say it again:
Sunrise. 😆
Downtown LA early in the morning is a different world. We get beautiful light, fewer pedestrians and much cleaner backgrounds, giving us more freedom to create those wide editorial photographs without fighting crowds.
From there, Downtown LA gives us plenty of opportunities to change the look as we explore the surrounding streets and architecture.
Best for: Modern, stylish and editorial engagement photos.

5. Pasadena City Hall
Pasadena City Hall is one of our go-to recommendations for couples who want engagement photographs that feel elegant and timeless.
The architecture gives us arches, columns, staircases, courtyards and beautiful symmetry. You can create an impressive amount of variety without needing to drive between several different locations.
It also photographs beautifully with a more elevated outfit, so if you’ve been looking for an excuse to dress up for your engagement photos…this might be it.
We’ve photographed multiple couples around Pasadena, and it continues to be one of our favorite architectural options in the Los Angeles area.
Best for: Elegant, romantic and timeless engagement photography.
MKEshoots tip: A dressier outfit works beautifully here and complements the architecture.
6. Griffith Observatory & Griffith Park
Few locations say Los Angeles quite like Griffith.
Depending on where we photograph, couples can incorporate city views, iconic architecture and the natural landscape surrounding Griffith Park.
This can be an especially fun choice if Los Angeles itself is meaningful to your relationship and you want the city to become part of your engagement story rather than simply serving as a background.
Because Griffith can get extremely busy, timing matters. Crowds, parking, events and access can all affect the experience, so always check current restrictions before planning your session.
Best for: Iconic Los Angeles engagement photos with city and landscape elements.

7. Vasquez Rocks
If your dream engagement session looks more like a destination adventure than Los Angeles, Vasquez Rocks is hard to beat.
The dramatic rock formations and open desert landscape create an entirely different feel from Malibu or Downtown LA.
We love locations like this because they give couples room to move. Walking, exploring and interacting naturally allows us to create candid photographs alongside those bigger editorial portraits.
Best for: Adventurous, earthy and dramatic engagement photos.
MKEshoots tip: Let the landscape do some of the work. Simple outfits often photograph beautifully against a dramatic environment.
8. Los Angeles Arboretum & Botanical Gardens
For couples who love greenery, gardens and a softer romantic look, a botanical setting can be beautiful for engagement photographs.
Locations like the Los Angeles County Arboretum offer lush scenery that feels completely different from the beaches and urban architecture LA is known for.
Garden locations can also change dramatically throughout the year, which makes the season of your engagement session part of the creative process.
Always check current photography policies, admission requirements and permit rules directly with the location before planning your session.
Best for: Romantic, colorful and nature-focused engagement photos.

9. Santa Monica & the Los Angeles Coast
If you want your engagement photos to feel unmistakably Southern California, the coastline gives us endless possibilities.
Santa Monica and surrounding coastal areas can combine sand, ocean, city energy and recognizable LA scenery.
The important thing is deciding what kind of coastal session you actually want.
If your priority is dramatic cliffs and rock formations, we’ll probably point you toward Malibu. If you want something that feels more energetic and unmistakably LA, Santa Monica may make more sense.
Best for: Fun, energetic and classic Southern California engagement photos.
10. A Location That Actually Means Something to You
Plot twist: our tenth recommendation isn’t a famous Instagram location.
It’s your location.
Maybe it’s where you had your first date.
Your favorite coffee shop.
The neighborhood where you spent your first year together.
Your home.
A hiking trail you visit every weekend.
Or somewhere completely random that has meaning to the two of you.
Some of the best engagement photographs aren’t created because the background is famous. They work because the couple actually has a connection to the place.
Tell us your story and we’ll help figure out how to turn it into an engagement session.
How Do You Choose the Best Engagement Photo Location?
Don’t choose a location simply because you’ve seen another couple photograph there.
Think about the feeling you want from your photographs.
Want romantic and cinematic?
Consider Malibu.
Want elegant and timeless?
Pasadena City Hall could be perfect.
Want modern and editorial?
Let’s explore Downtown Los Angeles.
Want adventurous and natural?
Malibu Creek or Vasquez Rocks may fit you better.
And if you have absolutely no idea?
That’s okay too. 😆
Helping couples choose locations, timing and lighting is part of what we do.
Sunrise vs. Sunset for Los Angeles Engagement Photos
We’re big fans of sunrise—especially for popular beaches and busy Los Angeles locations.
Yes, waking up early hurts for about five minutes.
Then you arrive at a location that would normally have hundreds of people and suddenly it feels like we rented the entire place for you.
Sunrise often gives us:
- Fewer crowds
- Easier parking
- Cleaner backgrounds
- Soft morning light
- More freedom to move around and create
Sunset can be incredible too, especially if you want that warm golden California light. The right choice depends on your location, season and the look you’re going for.
What Should You Wear for Your Engagement Session?
Our biggest advice is to look like yourself on a really good day.
You don’t need to perfectly match each other. Instead, choose outfits that complement one another and make sense for the location.
Many couples bring two looks—one more relaxed and another more elevated—which gives us additional variety without needing another photoshoot.
Most importantly, choose something you can actually move in.
If you’re uncomfortable standing still in an outfit, you’re probably going to be even less comfortable climbing rocks at Malibu in it. 😆
